Warning Signs

Gambling has stopped being harmless entertainment if you recognise these patterns: betting more than you can afford to lose; chasing losses with bigger deposits; borrowing money or selling things to gamble; lying to people close to you about how much you play; feeling anxious, guilty or irritable when you are not gambling; or letting it cut into work, study, sleep or relationships. Noticing one of these early is the point at which the tools below are most useful.

Tools at Every Operator

Every operator we list offers the same core set of controls in your account settings. Use them before you need them, not after a bad session.

  • Deposit limits: cap how much you can add per day, week or month. A limit you lower usually takes effect immediately, while a limit you raise is delayed by a cooling-off period.
  • Loss and wager limits: some sites let you cap losses or total stakes over a period, not just deposits.
  • Time-outs: lock yourself out for a short break, from 24 hours to several weeks.
  • Reality checks: on-screen reminders of how long you have been playing.
  • Self-exclusion: close access to your account for months or years. This is stronger than a time-out and is hard to reverse by design.

Practical Habits

Set a budget before you play and treat it as spent the moment you deposit. Never gamble with money meant for rent, food or bills. Do not chase a loss; the odds do not change because you are behind. Take regular breaks, and do not gamble to escape stress, boredom or low mood, which is when it does the most harm. Keep gambling as one activity among others rather than the main one.

Worried About Someone Else

You do not have to be the person gambling to get help. The Gambling Helpline and the Problem Gambling Foundation both support family and friends affected by someone else's gambling, with free counselling and practical advice on setting boundaries. Reaching out early, before debts or trust are badly damaged, gives the best chance of a good outcome.

Strictly 18+

Online gambling is for adults aged 18 and over. Operators run age verification, and it is illegal for anyone under 18 to gamble. If children use your devices, consider filtering software such as parental controls or blocking tools to keep gambling sites out of reach.
